Description:
This large Belgian painting by noted animal artist Paul Schouten (1860-1922) depicts a peasant farmer guiding a wagon and team of oxen through a rural landscape. Schouten, the half-brother of painter Henry Schouten, specialized in portrayals of cattle, horses, dogs, and other animals. This unusually well-executed example is distinguished by its detailed figures, atmospheric setting, and rich, earthy colors.
The canvas is presented in a substantial gilded wood-and-gesso frame of unusually high quality. The frame dates to the same period as the painting and is most likely original. Its layered ornament and warm gilded finish give the composition a strong architectural presence.
Like all our antiques, it was thoughtfully sourced in Europe, imported to our Oregon warehouse.
Condition:
The painting is in very good antique condition. The canvas remains tight on its stretchers and has only very minor nicks and scratches. The wood-and-gesso frame is also in very good antique condition and has been regilded. It has a few minor points of age-related damage typical of antique frames.
