An exceptional and complete set of fourteen antique French Stations of the Cross, handmade in architectural terracotta and richly finished with hand-applied polychrome and gilt accents. These devotional plaques were produced for permanent installation within a Catholic church or chapel and reflect the refined craftsmanship of late 1800's to early 1900's French ecclesiastical workshops.
Each station is framed within an ornate Gothic architectural surround, featuring pinnacles, arched niches, and classical detailing, and surmounted by a cross and Roman numeral. The central relief scenes are deeply modeled and expressive, illustrating the Passion narrative with clarity and emotional depth. Titles are inscribed in French, consistent with traditional liturgical use.
The use of fired terracotta-rather than plaster-indicates these were intended as durable, long-term architectural elements, suitable for mounting along stone or masonry nave walls. The reverse sides display raw terracotta surfaces, consistent with age and original church installation. This offering includes a complete, matched set of all fourteen stations, which is increasingly difficult to find intact. More photo are avaialbe upon request.
