Description:
This French jewelry casket dates to the Napoleon III, or Second Empire, period of 1852-1870. Its oval bronze form features finely detailed ornament and warm doré gilding. Cobalt-blue Sèvres porcelain panels encircle the casket, each hand-painted with intricate floral decoration and accented by fine white and red enamel beading. The hinged lid centers a finely painted portrait of a woman within a gilt border.
The casket rests on ornate feet and opens to reveal an interior lined with thin, hand-cut wood pieces. A silk dust cover remains on the underside. Its substantial size and weight, finely executed bronze work, hand-painted porcelain, and remarkably complete enamel decoration distinguish it from more ordinary jewelry and vanity boxes of the period.
Like all our antiques, it was thoughtfully sourced in Europe, imported to our Oregon warehouse.
Condition:
This casket is in very good antique condition. The bronze work and doré gilding are exceptionally well preserved, with a warm antique patina. Of the several hundred fine white and red enamel beads, approximately 10 are missing. The silk dust cover on the underside is considerably worn but remains intact and in place.
