This antique Belgian terracotta statue of Jesus as the Good Shepherd dates to the mid to late 1800's. The youthful shepherd carries a lamb across his shoulders while holding a broad-brimmed hat at his side. His gently lowered expression and the lamb resting against his face give the composition a tender, peaceful character.
The figure is formed from off-white fired terracotta, a material often used in 19th-century Belgian religious statuary. It retains its hand-painted surface, with a textured tunic beneath a flowing brown cloak. Carefully modeled folds, hands, feet, and the detailed wool of the lamb add depth to the design. The underside shows hand-formed surfaces and bears the initials "JK." Standing 30" tall, this substantial devotional statue is well suited to a church, chapel, prayer space, or religious art collection.
Like all our antiques, it was thoughtfully sourced in Europe, imported to our Oregon warehouse, and carefully finished with antique-grade paste wax to preserve its beauty for years to come.
Condition:
This terracotta statue is in good antique condition with surface wear, scattered paint loss, small chips, and age-related crazing. The hollow base has a large irregular construction opening on the underside, as commonly found on terracotta sculptures of this type. Please review the detailed photographs.
