Special Notes:
This altar retable is currently in our Belgian warehouse and scheduled to arrive here in our next shipment.
Description:
The 130 year old Saint Sepulcher church in Nivelles, Belgium closed in 2019 due to structural issues that were not economically practical to repair. It was deconsecrated that same year. In February 2024 we purchased the furnishings with the hope of salvaging them and placing them in new homes in the USA. This retable was one of the furnishings.
This high altar retable (altar back) was created in the workshop of Laurent Delvaux (1696-1778) for the Nivelles church. An Exceptional Wood-Sculptured Tabernacle, Eglise du Saint-Sépulcre, Nivelles, circa 1740. It was made by or under the supervision of Laurent Delvaux, based on the model of the Tempietto (Rome, circa 1502). Delvaux was at least consulted on the architectural design of the tabernacle.
One of the attached photos shows the original high altar in the church.
Note that the large upper section revolves to expose one of two chambers, the first is mirrored and the second has carved oak panels. The chambers can be accessed either from the front or from a hidden rear compartment (photos & video).

Overall, this piece is in very good antique condition with no woodworm, no dry rot, and no structural issues. It shows minor surface wear consistent with age and historical use, which contributes to its authentic character.
