Description:
This polychrome wood Gothic Revival statue dates to the mid-1800's and was crafted in France. It depicts Saint Anne teaching the young Virgin Mary to read, a subject known as the Education of the Virgin. Anne stands beside Mary with one arm behind her and her other hand extended toward the open book Mary holds.
The figures wear blue and russet robes with patterned borders and gold-colored details. Anne's silver-gray veil frames her face, while the book draws attention to the interaction between them. Painted decoration continues around the sides and back of this 32-inch devotional sculpture.
Like all our antiques, it was thoughtfully sourced in Europe, imported to our Oregon warehouse, and carefully finished with antique-grade paste wax to preserve its beauty for years to come.

This statue is in very good antique condition, with surface wear and small areas of paint loss, especially on the open book and along the base. Please review the photographs for condition details.
