Description:
An exceptional antique Gothic Revival oak staircase, richly carved and salvaged from an historic European church pulpit. Note that total rise for this staircase is 6 feet. However, it can be installed with a landing (similar to that shown in photo 10) to span an entire floor height. This substantial architectural element features deeply carved handrails, pointed Gothic tracery panels, and foliate detailing throughout-hallmarks of late 1800's to early 1900's craftsmanship. The lower base step is constructed of stone and is separate and unattached to the main staircase section, consistent with its original pulpit installation and professional architectural salvage.
The staircase retains its original patina, showcasing the depth and warmth of aged oak. Decorative elements include carved rosettes, trefoil and quatrefoil motifs, and ornamental spandrel panels beneath the rails. The scale, craftsmanship, and iconography reflect its original ecclesiastical setting, where it would have served as the ceremonial access to the pulpit within the church interior.
Dimensions:
The rise from floor to top of the top step is 72" including the stone step
Each step is 8" tall and has a 9.25" tread width
Outside width is 37" and inside width is 28"
The openings in the side rails are 6" wide
Height to top of the upper post is 111"
Horizontal length is 73"
Condition:
Very good antique condition. Structurally solid with no signs of woodworm, dry rot or instability. All primary carved elements, panels, and handrails remain intact. Surface wear, edge softening, minor nicks, and tonal variation are present throughout, consistent with age and historic use. Overall, this piece is in very good antique condition with no woodworm, no dry rot, and no structural issues. It shows minor surface wear consistent with age and historical use, which contributes to its authentic character.
